Choosing a Ferret Cage

Are you thinking of buying a ferret but you’re unsure about the right type of cage to get? Or, are you a ferret owner who’s unsure if the cage you bought is still up to the task of providing a good home for your pet?

Buying a Cage for the First Time

Ferret CageIf you’re thinking of getting a ferret you’ll need to make sure that you pick the right ferret cage. Giving your pet the right amount of room, as well as all the facilities they need is the key to their happiness.

Your ferret deserves a cage where they can rest and play with ease, because they’re going to be spending a lot of time there. Ferrets sleep for 14-18 hours per day, after all.

Giving your ferret 5 star accommodation needn’t be too expensive, though you can count on me not to let your precious ferret know that!

One of the most popular options is to go for a multi level cage, as that will give your ferret plenty of room to move, as well as keeping sleep areas separated from the ferret’s other needs.

You can also start small, for a young ferret, and expand as they get bigger and older. Expandable cages will be the best approach for this, as they allow you to budget the expense over time.

You can add layers as you go, until the multiple ferret owner has a skyscraper on their hands!

Is Your Ferret’s Cage Still Suitable?

Maybe you’re a ferret owner who’s had their ferret cage for a while and you’re wondering if the cage is still suitable. They do get bigger over time, after all. It’s also possible that you’ve added so many toys and furnishings over time that it doesn’t feel as big as it used to.

That ferret cage you bought for your young ferret might be starting to get a little cramped if your ferret is all grown up!

If you’ve got an expandable cage solution it’s time to get an extension cage. If not, it’s time to trade up to a bigger model! Don’t throw away your old cage though- you can still use it for short journeys to the vet. It might be easier than moving your ferret about in a huge multi-level cage!

Ferrets will often find a way to let you know that their cage is no longer doing it for them, space wise. If your happy ferret is starting to act out, there’s a good chance that your ferret’s outgrown their cage. If you haven’t changed anything else, it’s as good a place as any to start.
